ADJECTIVE CLAUSE

DEFINITIONS

  • Clause is a group of words containing subject and verb.
  • Independent Clause is a complete sentence. It contains the main subject and verb of a sentence.
  • Dependent Clause is not a complete sentence. It must be connected to an independent clause.
  • Adjective Clause is a dependent clause that modofies a noun. It describes, identifies, or gives further information about a noun.

USING SUBJECT PRONOUNS : WHO, WHICH, THAT

  1. I thanked the woman. She helped me. (I thanked the woman who helped me.)
  2. The book is mine. It is on the table. (The book which is on the table is mine. OR The book that is on the table is mine.)

who: used for people, which: used for things, that: used for both people and things

USING OBJECT PRONOUNS: WHO(M), WHICH, THAT

  1. The man was Mr. Jim. I saw him. (The man who(m) I saw was Mr. Jim.)
  2. The movie wasn't very good. We saw it last night. (The movie which we saw last night wasn't very good.)

who(m): used for people, which: used for things, that: used for both people and things.

USING WHOSE

  1. I know the man. His bicycle was stolen. (I know the man whose bicycle was stolen.)

whose: used to show possession

USING WHERE AND WHEN

  1. The building is very old. He lives there. (The building where he lives is very old.)
  2. I'll never forget the day. I met you on that day. (I'll never forget the day when I met you.)

where: used to modify a place, when: used to modify a noun of time.

EXCERCISE

Combine the sentences using the second sentence as an adjective clause.

  1. The city was beautiful. We spent our vacation there.
  2. The town is small. I grew up there.
  3. July is the month. The weather is usually the hottest in that month.
  4. The girl is happy. She won the race.
  5. The people were very nice. We visited them yesterday.
  6. The taxi driver was friendly. He took me to the airport.
  7. I like the composition. You wrote it.
  8. The man called the police. His wallet was stollen.
  9. The people were nice. We visited their house.
  10. I live in a dormitory. Its residents come from many countries.
